The November/December 2006 issue of the journal Mycologia published the 24 papers listed below, which together provide an initial synthesis of a working phylogenetic classification of fungi.

These papers provide you with authoritative, research-level summaries of the phylogeny of fungi; but we emphasise they are research-level publications.

Five years of financial support from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled A phylogeny for kingdom Fungi (Deep Hypha) enabled more than 100 fungal systematists to assess the methods necessary for such a project. A second NSF programme provided financial support for the project entitled Assembling the Fungal Tree of Life (AFTOL), which is now bringing this research together.

Mycologia is published by the Mycological Society of America and publishes papers on all aspects of the fungi, including lichens. If you intend to be a serious mycologist this journal should be on your regular reading list.
